Tampering in the KJV

The AV 1611 KJV has been tampered with to both major and minor extents, which adds to it's problems relative to the ChurchOfTheEastPeshitta. It's relatively easy to see what has been tampered with, because by the KingJamesIRulesOfTranslation, it was based on the Bishop's bible.

  1. The ordinary Bible read in the Church, commonly called the Bishops Bible, to be followed, and as little altered as the Truth of the original will permit.

The Bishop's bible was one of the family of Tyndale bibles, and so it's easy to compare the good Tyndale bibles to the later KJV.

Although they pale in comparison to the Wescott and Hort wholesale re-engineering, we collect some of them here for reference. It's easy enough to make a list and format it up as a commentary that can be read alongside a KJV as corrections. KJV is the reference because of versification but there is no need to remain ignorant of its errors and tampering.

Additionally, knowing the errors and tamperings in the KJV is a useful weapon in the fight against the pernicious heresy of KingJamesOnlyism.

Major KJV Tampering

The most major tampering in the KJV was by King James himself. When King James commissioned the King James Version, he decreed 15 principles of translation which were instituted by Richard Bancroft, the bishop of London in 1604. The 3rd rule was:

  1. The Old Ecclesiastical Words to be kept, viz. the Word Church not to be translated Congregation et. cetera.

Rule 3 is a travesty of Tyndale's work. Whilst running and hiding and fleeing the agents of a sadistic English Lord Chancellor who wanted him dead, he still took the time to write a book back at the sadist defending his translation of ekklesia as "Congregation" not "the Word Church". The book explains in detail Tyndales's reasons for the critical choices of translation he made of the "et. cetera" words. These changes are major and systematic, and change the whole flavour of the KJV relative to a real Tyndale bible like Matthew's, which nonetheless are the root of the bibles that the KJV was made from (rules 1 and 14).

As James wanted. As Tyndale gave his life to prevent. See

PS: The PeshittA uses Assembly, which my Greek speaking friends tell me is just as valid a translation for ekklesia as congregation, the former having less of a religious flavour. As in English: we congregate or we assemble, but we don't usually assemble for fire-alarms.

Mid-sized KJV Tampering

(1 Timothy 3:16)

In the KJV (1Tim. 3:16) reads:

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was
manifest in the flesh...

Newton showed the word "God" was substituted to make the phrase read "God was manifest in the flesh" instead of "which was manifested in the flesh". Again the KJV has rewritten the bible to try to support the Trinity.

The PeshittA 1Tim. has:

And truly, great is this Mystery of Righteousness; The One
who was manifested in the flesh, ...

Minor KJV Tampering

We have a TSV file with dozens of "errors" or minor tamperings in the KJV; we'll try to format it up as an OSIS/Sword commentary so people can read them alongside their bibles.

Gargantuan Tampering After the KJV

To put things in perspective, these tamperings are minor compared to the ongoing tampering after the KJV with the NIV and NASB:
